Trying something new, especially if you aren’t sure you will love it, can be a bit scary.
To help you determine if belly dancing is something you are likely to enjoy, I have compiled this list of signs based on the common personality, lifestyle, and aspirations shared among many of those who fall in love with the dance and decide to enjoy it long term.
Just so you know…
The vast majority of belly dance enthusiasts are professional, educated, adult women of all ages, body types, and backgrounds. Some men enjoy belly dancing, as well. So, there is no need to consider any other type of characteristic or requirement. As long as you can physically move and wish to learn to dance, you can do this!

You need time for yourself to de-stress and recharge your body, mind, and soul.
Modern life can be very busy and filled with stress. Between work, family, homes, and holidays, there is barely enough time to do the things you enjoy. However, study after study shows that stress is the single biggest contributor to unhappiness and disease. That’s why it’s so important for you to invest in yourself by regularly enjoying activities that relieve stress and re-energize you.
"Cardio" bores the hell out of you.
For many of us, doing non-stop meaningless movement is not very fun. In fact, it’s quite boring and few of us want to force ourselves to do something that isn’t very fun. Learning to belly dance is different! You aren’t just senselessly moving around. You are learning about different cultures, history, music, all kinds of interesting subjects while getting an effective, full-body workout, at the same time. There’s always something cool to learn that keeps you engaged and coming back for more.
You love to dance or dream of learning to dance.
While some people have learned to dance other dance styles before learning to belly dance, many of our students have never taken a dance class in their life. Don’t let two-left-feet or no prior experience stop you! Ahlam Academy has successfully trained dancers of all dance backgrounds, even no background at all.
You wish to do something “different” and “unique” as a hobby.
While stamp collecting and scrapbooking might be a good time for some, you may wish to enjoy a hobby that resonates with your sense of independence and creativity. Belly dancing is all about discovering, developing, and expressing your unique self, through dance. Though belly dancers may also enjoy being in dance troupes, it’s not ultimately about doing something like everyone else. It’s really about being authentically you.
You enjoy the company of other truly wonderful, supportive people.
In our fast-paced lives, it is hard to find the time to hang out with friends, much less find new ones. Wouldn’t it be awesome if you had an enjoyable activity that included lots of kind, friendly, and supportive people? At Ahlam Academy, we have a tribe of wonderful people who may become your new best-friends-in-dance.
You love to learn new things and explore your world.
If you love to learn about new people, places and things, learning to belly dance at Ahlam Academy will offer you endless opportunities to discover new things about yourself and the world you live in. We dive deep into the geography, culture, and history of the dances we teach. Along the way, you’ll explore your own internal landscape, on the most important journey you’ll ever take, the one of self-discovery.
You'd love more opportunities to “dress up” and feel glamorous.
Do you remember how fun it was to dress up as a child? You could have fun being creative and using your imagination to become anyone you wanted to be. I have great news! You don’t have to give that up. One of the most enjoyable aspects of belly dancing is costuming. Not that we need an excuse or permission to have fun with our look, but it gives many of us a chance to regularly have fun with our hair, makeup, and clothes, as adults.
There is only one way to know for sure!
