Competition Rules

Competitor Entry:

Enter Early. A category must have at least THREE, but no more than SIX competitors.

No entries will be accepted after the Entry Deadline.

All group competitors must sign a release form / hold harmless indemnity form. If they haven’t done so by the time they arrive, they’ll be asked to do so at the EVENT. Should a release form not be signed by everyone in your group, your group will be disqualified. If you are submitting a group entry, the “group leader” will be responsible for making sure all participants have submitted their release forms by show date. Our staff can’t run around and find your people.

There will be no refund of entry fees unless a category is canceled. Entry fees will only be refunded in the event of a category cancellation. If for any reason, the applicant registration is denied before the competition date, entry fees will be fully refunded.

The Space City Belly Dance Show & Competition (SCBDSC) is open to North American residents, 18 years or older.

Before the Competition / Planning Your Winning Performance:

All music minimums and limits are strictly enforced. Make sure the start of your music, entrance, performance, and exit including exit music are within the time limit. The timer will begin when your music starts and the time will be stopped when you are off stage. A 5 second grace period for mechanical/human error. You will be disqualified if you go over the category’s limit.

All music must be in an authentic style of the chosen category. Oriental categories must use oriental music. We suggest an oriental entrance composition, music common to the belly dance genre, or an appropriate music selection from a country of origin. Fusion music must be appropriate for fusion. The Folkloric category must use folkloric music. Taqsim or Drum solo music may comprise no more than 30% of your performance.  If you choose music that is inappropriate in style or content (must be family friendly), you will be disqualified.

Props are NOT allowed in any category except the “Folkloric” and “Galaxy” category. Competitors may enter with a veil (no more than 30 seconds of performance) or use zills (as long as you are dancing and playing at the same time.) You are not allowed to just stand there and play, zills should embellish your dance, in this case.

You must enter the stage area from “House Right” and your entire dance must be performed on the stage. You are not allowed to enter, dance, or exit anywhere off stage during your performance. All the judges and audience must be able to see you clearly.

Your costume should fit well, be appropriate for your chosen categories, and must be appropriate for all audiences. At no time in your performance should any private part be exposed. Always wear clearly visible dance shorts. Never wear thong-style underwear only. Male group competitors must wear athletic/dance-supporters. Any competitors whose costume reveals too much will be disqualified.

Submit your music by the SPECIFIED date or you will be disqualified. No exceptions!

Day of the Competition:

Competitors must check in at the front desk no later than 5:15 pm. Late check-in may disqualify you. Better early than late!

You must wear a cover-up over your costume when you’re not performing. If not, you will be disqualified.

Bring a backup copy of your music within ONE(1) MP3 file on a flash drive with nothing else on it.  All music will be checked prior to the event, but should something happen and we need your music, your back-up may save you from disqualification.

All scores are final. Judges’ score sheets will be available to each competitor at the front desk at the end of the event.

Please do not talk to the judges about your performance or other related topics UPON ARRIVAL AND BEFORE THE COMPETITION RESULTS ARE ANNOUNCED. You will be disqualified if you do so.

During the Competition:

Please remain in costume for the duration of the event. Wear a cover-up when not on stage.

Onstage appearances take place:

  • When you perform/compete
  • One-by-one at the end of your category, entering as your bio is read.
  • All together at the end of the show for award announcements and one last BIG picture.

After the Competition:

Competitors, Judges, and Guest Performers authorize Ahlam Academy, Silk Road Cultural Arts Exchange, and Space City Belly Dance Show & Competition, entities, associates and/or heirs to use or sell any or all photos or videotapes taken during the said competition, for educational, promotional and professional purposes. Should you not represent yourself in an appropriate manner during your Title year, your title may be taken from you.

Interruption of Performance:

If the interruption is due to the fault of SCBDSC or the venue and its equipment, individuals/group may restart from the beginning or at the point of interruption.  If the interruption is due to the failure of the competitor’s music, the competitor may either continue or withdraw from the competition.  We reserve the rights to stop the performance due to an obvious injury.  In the case that an injury results in the interruption of a group’s performance, the group will be allowed to re-group before performing their routine again.  Performance must be repeated during the time allotted for their category.

Reasons for Disqualification:

Reasons for disqualification include, but are not limited to, inappropriate choreography/music (at the discretion of Space City Belly Dance Show & Competition officials), more or less performers / competitors than allowed on the floor, participants not listed on the official roster, and/or unregistered competitor(s) listed on the official group roster.  If a group is found with unregistered competitors, the group will be disqualified.

The Space City Belly Dance Show & Competition reserves the right to disqualify any group or individual competitor for any reason stated herein, or for any unforeseen circumstance or action generally considered unbecoming of a belly dancer performer.

Judges / Officials / Volunteers:

  • Judges/officials may not enter the competition.
  • On-site volunteers may not enter the competition. Off-site volunteers (that couldn’t possibly affect the outcome) may enter the competition.
  • SCBDSC has the right to change the judges advertised at any time. Should for any reason whatsoever, any or all of the judges are unable to attend this event, SCBDSC has the right to choose/substitute judges for the event, as long as there is a minimum of 3 judges scoring each competitor/group.
